Before booking, however, there is one important detail worth understanding: Saint Joseph does not have hotels built directly on the sand of Silver Beach. For first-time visitors, I usually recommend staying near downtown.

One of the biggest advantages is what happens after the beach day ends. Instead of driving to dinner or evening activities, you can simply walk through downtown and enjoy the city at a slower pace.

Staying Near the Harbor

The St. Joseph River channel creates a very different setting from the beach district. Instead of sunsets over open water, you’ll find marinas, passing boats, harbor views, and easy access to one of the area’s premier golf destinations.
The most recognizable property in this area is The Inn at Harbor Shores, which serves as a popular base for golfers, boaters, and travelers seeking a more resort-style experience.

During particularly cold winters, ice can accumulate around the lighthouse, piers, and shoreline, creating the frozen scenes that have made Saint Joseph famous among winter photographers.

Located directly across the St. Joseph River, Benton Harbor shares much of Saint Joseph’s history while offering a distinctly different experience.

Saint Joseph is approximately 90 miles from downtown Chicago. Most travelers can reach the city in about 1.5 to 2 hours under normal traffic conditions.

Is Silver Beach free?
Silver Beach County Park is free to access on foot or by bicycle. Visitors who park a vehicle inside the county park lot are required to pay a parking fee during the operating season.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Saint Joseph
After spending much of my life exploring Michigan’s west coast, Saint Joseph remains one of the destinations I recommend most often to first-time visitors.
Part of that recommendation comes from how much variety is packed into such a small area. Within a few minutes, you can go from walking a sandy Lake Michigan beach to browsing downtown shops, visiting a lighthouse, enjoying a local restaurant, or watching boats move through one of the busiest harbor channels on this stretch of shoreline.
What has always stood out to me is that Saint Joseph works equally well for very different kinds of travelers. Families come for Silver Beach, the carousel, and the waterfront attractions. Couples use it as a base for exploring wine country. Day-trippers appreciate the walkable downtown and easy access from Chicago, while repeat visitors often return season after season to experience the city in a different light.
If this is your first visit, give yourself enough time to experience more than just the beach. Walk through Lake Bluff Park. Spend time downtown. Explore a nearby winery. Watch the sunset from the shoreline and, if you’re lucky enough to visit during one of the city’s signature festivals, stay a little longer and enjoy the atmosphere that keeps people returning year after year.
Saint Joseph may be one of the most approachable destinations on Michigan’s Sunset Coast, but it is also one of the most rewarding.
