I like having a kitchen for easy breakfasts, enough bedrooms to give everyone some space, and an outdoor area where we can actually spend time together. Depending on the town, you’ll find everything from downtown condos and beach cottages to larger homes near Lake Michigan and quieter rentals tucked away from the busier areas.
My advice is to choose your town before falling in love with a property. South Haven, New Buffalo, St. Joseph and Saugatuck can produce very different trips, even when the rentals look similar online. Where to Find the Best Vacation Rentals in Southwest Michigan
I’d choose your town before you spend much time comparing individual rentals. South Haven is my pick for a traditional beach week, New Buffalo and Harbor Country work particularly well for quick getaways from Chicago, St. Joseph is an easy family base, and Saugatuck and Douglas suit couples who want either a walkable stay or somewhere quieter. The rental may be where you sleep, but its location determines how much of your vacation you spend driving.
South Haven — Best for Classic Beach Vacations
South Haven is where I’d look first for the classic week-at-the-lake vacation. There’s a good mix of cottages, condos and larger vacation homes, including options near downtown and closer to the shoreline. That range makes South Haven particularly practical when several generations or two families are travelling together.
Shores Vacation Rentals is one local company worth checking. Its South Haven inventory includes neighborhood cottages, condos and larger homes, giving you considerably more variety than simply searching for a lakefront house.
I’d decide how important the water really is before paying more for location. If your family expects to spend most days at the beach, staying close makes sense. If you’ll divide your time between town and exploring Southwest Michigan, a comfortable rental a little farther away may be the smarter choice.
New Buffalo & Harbor Country — Best for Chicago Getaways
New Buffalo is usually where I point friends coming from Chicago who want Southwest Michigan without spending half of a short getaway getting there. You can find downtown condos and cottages as well as larger vacation homes, while the surrounding Harbor Country communities broaden the choices considerably.
Don’t limit your search to New Buffalo. Union Pier is worth considering for a quieter cottage-style stay, while Three Oaks works well if being directly on the water isn’t the point of the trip. For groups, Harbor Country also has some larger and more upscale homes that can make sharing one property more practical than booking several rooms.
I’d pay extra for downtown New Buffalo only if you’re going to use the location. Being close to restaurants, shops and town is valuable when you plan to walk. If you expect to drive around Harbor Country most days anyway, widening the search may give you a better fit for your budget and group.

St. Joseph & Stevensville — Best for Families
St. Joseph is my choice when a family wants the beach but doesn’t want the entire vacation to depend on it. Rentals around St. Joseph can put you close to downtown, Silver Beach and several family attractions, which is especially useful with younger children.
Location matters here. A rental convenient to downtown can make it easier to combine the beach, restaurants and attractions without repeatedly moving the car. If walkability isn’t important, I’d expand the search toward Stevensville rather than automatically paying more to stay close to downtown.

Saugatuck & Douglas — Best for Couples and Walkable Getaways
Saugatuck and Douglas give you two quite different ways to plan a rental stay. You can stay close to downtown and walk to restaurants and shops, or move farther out and trade that convenience for more privacy.
Old Pike Cottages is a useful example of the closer-to-town option, with waterfront cottage accommodations near downtown Saugatuck. Bella Vita Vacation Rentals offers a broader mix that includes suites, cottages, condos, townhomes and larger vacation homes around Saugatuck and Douglas. What Type of Southwest Michigan Vacation Rental Should You Choose?
Once you’ve picked the town, think about how you’ll use the rental. I wouldn’t pay extra for lakefront if most of my days will be spent exploring, and I wouldn’t choose a secluded cottage if I plan to walk to dinner every night. Match the property to the trip.
Lakefront Vacation Rentals
Lakefront works best when the property is part of the vacation—especially for families planning plenty of time near the water.
Read the listing carefully. Lakefront, lake view, beach access and near the beach are not interchangeable. A beautiful Lake Michigan view doesn’t necessarily give you access to the beach. I always check the property description and map before booking.
Beach Houses and Cottages
For a traditional summer trip, I like a cottage or beach house when we’re staying several days. The kitchen, outdoor space and extra room are useful when everyone isn’t packing up again tomorrow morning.
Check minimum stays before getting attached to a property. Popular summer rentals may require longer bookings, particularly during peak season.
Downtown Condos and Cottages
Choose downtown when you value convenience over privacy. In New Buffalo and Saugatuck, being able to walk to restaurants, shops and other stops can be more useful than having a bigger property farther away.
If you expect to drive most places anyway, I’d widen the search and compare prices before paying for a downtown address.
Cabins and Wooded Rentals
I like cabins and wooded properties for couples, fall weekends and trips where quiet matters more than being close to town.
The trade-off is usually convenience. Check the location carefully so your peaceful retreat doesn’t turn every restaurant run into an unnecessary drive.
Large Vacation Homes
For extended families and groups, ignore the headline occupancy number for a moment and look at the floor plan.
I check the actual bedrooms, bathrooms, parking and sleeping arrangements. “Sleeps 12” sounds impressive until you discover several people are expected to sleep on sofa beds. For a multi-night trip, enough real bedrooms and bathrooms can make a much bigger difference.

What to Check Before Booking a Vacation Rental
Before I book, I look past the pretty photos and check the details that can actually affect the trip. Beach access, parking and the final price tell me far more than another picture of the living room.
Beach Access
This is the one I’d verify carefully. A Lake Michigan view doesn’t necessarily mean you can walk down to the beach.
Look for the exact arrangement: private access, shared access, a nearby public beach or simply a view of the water. If beach time is important, know what you’re getting before you pay.
Parking
For two people in one car, parking may not matter much. Bring three families in separate vehicles and it certainly does.
Check how many cars are allowed and where they can park, particularly with larger homes and downtown rentals.
Minimum-Stay Requirements
Summer can be less flexible than a spring or fall getaway. Some rentals require longer stays during busy periods, so I’d check the minimum before spending too much time comparing properties.
That matters especially when you only want a weekend.
Pet Policies
I never take “pet-friendly” at face value. Look at the fee, number of pets allowed, size restrictions and any rules specific to the property.
Bringing the dog to the beach? Check that beach’s rules separately. The rental allowing your dog doesn’t mean the nearby beach will.
Cleaning Fees and Other Charges
The nightly rate is only useful if you know what the stay actually costs.
I compare the final totals after cleaning charges, booking or service fees, pet fees and any required deposits are included. Two rentals with similar nightly rates can look quite different by the time you reach checkout.
When to Book a Southwest Michigan Vacation Rental
I plan summer rentals differently from the rest of the year. If you have your heart set on a certain location or type of property, give yourself more time. If your dates and town are flexible, you can usually keep your options broader.
Summer
For summer, I’d start looking early—especially for lakefront rentals, homes near the beach and larger properties for families or groups. Those are the trips where I wouldn’t wait around hoping the perfect house is still available later.
If you’re flexible about the town or don’t need to be near the water, you have more room to compare.
Spring and Fall
Spring and fall are my favourite times to be flexible. If the trip is about wineries, trails, restaurants, fall colour or exploring several towns, I care more about having a comfortable base than securing a particular beach location.
That also lets me widen the search beyond the busiest summer areas.
Winter
In winter, I choose the property differently. A cabin or cottage with a fireplace or hot tub can become part of the reason for the trip rather than simply somewhere to sleep.
For a quiet couples’ weekend, I’d concentrate on finding the right property and setting instead of paying extra to stay close to places I may not visit much.
Vacation Rental or Hotel: Which Is Better?
For me, this usually comes down to how long I’m staying and who is coming with me.
With family or friends, I’ll usually take the vacation rental. Separate bedrooms, a kitchen and a living room are worth having when everyone is together for several days. I also like having somewhere to sit at night that isn’t the edge of a hotel bed.
For a quick one- or two-night trip, I’m more likely to book a hotel. I don’t need a full kitchen or extra bedrooms, and I appreciate being able to check in, enjoy the trip and leave without treating the place like a temporary home.
