Choosing a Hotel in Southwest Michigan
I’ve learned that picking a hotel in Southwest Michigan backwards is an easy way to spend more money than you need to. Don’t fall in love with a room first. Figure out where you want to spend your time, then find the hotel that makes that trip easier.
If this is your first visit, I’d start around St. Joseph and Benton Harbor. You’ll have Silver Beach, downtown St. Joseph, restaurants and plenty to do within a relatively small area, while still being well positioned for day trips. South Haven is where I’d lean if you’re imagining more of a traditional Michigan beach vacation and want the harbour and downtown to be part of your everyday plans.
New Buffalo is different. I like it better for a couples’ weekend or a short Harbor Country trip where dinner, wineries and exploring the communities along Red Arrow Highway are part of the reason you came.
And don’t automatically dismiss Stevensville or the inland hotels. If you’re going to spend your days driving around Southwest Michigan, I’d rather see you save some money on the room and spend it on the trip.

I get asked for my favorite Southwest Michigan hotel, and I never have one answer. I’d choose Marina Grand for a completely different trip than I’d choose Hotel Nichols. That’s why I’d narrow your list by the kind of weekend you’re planning instead of chasing whichever hotel happens to have the highest rating.

There’s one Michigan hotel-booking lesson I’d pass along before you pick from that list: read the location description carefully.
“Waterfront” can sound like you’ll walk out of the lobby and put your feet in Lake Michigan. That isn’t always what you’re getting. A property might sit on a harbor or river, another might offer rooms with Lake Michigan views, and another may simply put you within easy reach of the beach.
I don’t consider any of those a bad choice. I just want you to pay for the location you actually want. If morning coffee overlooking the harbor sounds better than having sand outside your door, great. If you’re bringing kids and want the simplest possible beach day, that distinction matters a whole lot more.
Best Hotels in St. Joseph and Benton Harbor
If you’re asking me where I’d stay on a first trip to Southwest Michigan, St. Joseph and Benton Harbor would be high on my list. Not because every hotel is sitting beside the beach—it isn’t—but because this area gives you room to change your mind. Spend the morning at Silver Beach, wander downtown St. Joseph after lunch, go somewhere good for dinner, then head farther up or down the lakeshore the next day.
The question is how much you want your hotel to be part of the trip. I’d spend more for the setting if this were an anniversary weekend. If I knew I’d be gone from breakfast until dinner, I’d save the money and choose convenience.
The Inn at Harbor Shores — Best Resort-Style Stay
The Inn at Harbor Shores is the one I’d choose when the hotel is supposed to feel like a getaway rather than simply the place where I left my suitcase.
It sits on the St. Joseph River harbor, and I actually think knowing that before you arrive makes a difference. This is a harbor resort, not a hotel where you open the door and walk straight onto Silver Beach. You’re paying for the setting, marina atmosphere and a property with enough going on that coming back early in the evening doesn’t feel like wasting vacation time.
There are indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, balconies on the guest rooms and Plank’s Tavern on the property. Harbor Shores Golf Club is nearby as well, so this is an easy one for me to recommend for a golf weekend, anniversary or a couple who wants some downtime built into the trip.
Would I pay the extra money if I planned to leave at 8 in the morning and return at 10 at night? Probably not. That would miss the point of staying here.
Holiday Inn Express & Suites St. Joseph Lakefront — Best for Lake Views
This one fills a different need. I’d look at the Holiday Inn Express when I wanted Lake Michigan in the scenery but didn’t need the resort experience.
It sits along Lakeshore Drive overlooking the lake, which can make it very tempting when you’re comparing rooms online. Just understand the layout before booking: Lakeshore Drive separates the property from Lake Michigan. “Lakefront” shouldn’t be read as “walk out of the hotel and onto the sand.”
That wouldn’t stop me from staying here. I’d simply book it because I wanted the view and a convenient base for St. Joseph, not because I expected a private beachfront hotel.
Courtyard St. Joseph Benton Harbor — Best Modern Hotel Option
Now, if you told me, “Kim, we’re going to be running around Southwest Michigan all day. I just want a nice hotel to come back to,” I’d start looking at the Courtyard in Benton Harbor.
This is the practical option. You’re not paying for a downtown St. Joseph address, and you’ll be using the car to reach Silver Beach and the restaurants and shops downtown. For some trips, that’s a disadvantage. For others, I couldn’t care less.
The Courtyard gives you the familiar modern-hotel setup, including an indoor pool, fitness center and the Bistro. More importantly, its location makes sense when your plans extend beyond St. Joseph and you’re going to be driving anyway.
That’s really how I’d choose among these three. The Inn at Harbor Shores when the stay itself matters. Holiday Inn Express when I want that Lake Michigan setting. Courtyard when I want a comfortable base and would rather put more of the trip budget toward what I’m doing outside the hotel.

Best Hotels in South Haven
South Haven is one of those places where I pay more attention to the hotel’s address than its list of amenities. If I’m coming here for a couple of days, I want to be able to walk out the door and get on with the day. Downtown, the harbor, something to eat — that convenience can be worth paying for when South Haven is the reason for the trip.
For a longer Southwest Michigan trip, I look at it differently. If tomorrow means driving down to St. Joseph and the next day has me wandering around wine country, I’m not paying a premium just so my room is downtown. That’s money I can use somewhere else.
Historic Hotel Nichols — Best Downtown Stay
Hotel Nichols makes sense to me for a South Haven weekend because of its Center Street location. You’re right in town, rather than staying out near the highway and driving back and forth every time you want dinner or decide to wander around for an hour.
And this one has some age on it. Hotel Nichols dates back to the 1800s, so I wouldn’t go into it expecting the polished sameness of a recently built chain hotel. That’s actually part of why I find it interesting.
I know travellers who love opening a hotel-room door and knowing almost exactly what they’re going to get. There’s nothing wrong with that. Hotel Nichols is for the person who would trade some of that predictability for an older building with a little more personality and a location that puts South Haven outside the front door.
For two or three nights when I planned on spending most of my time in town, that trade would make sense to me.
Yelton Manor — Best Romantic Alternative Near the Beach
Now, Yelton Manor is where I’d send you with a warning: we’re stretching the definition of “hotel” here.
It’s really a bed-and-breakfast-style stay, and that changes the experience. Yelton Manor is on North Shore Drive near Lake Michigan, away from the more conventional hotel setup. If you’re planning a couples’ trip and part of the fun is staying somewhere smaller and more personal, it deserves a look.
I wouldn’t recommend it to everybody. Some people want to come and go without much interaction, grab their things and head out for the day. Give them a regular hotel and everybody is happier.
But if you’re coming to South Haven for an anniversary, a quiet weekend together, or simply want your lodging to have more character than a standard room, this is the sort of place I’d consider.
And that’s really the decision I’d make in South Haven: don’t pay for somebody else’s version of the perfect vacation. If being downtown means you can park the car Friday and barely think about it until Sunday, spend the money on location. If you’re going to be exploring Southwest Michigan every day anyway, widen the search.

Best Hotels in New Buffalo and Harbor Country
New Buffalo is one place where I can be talked into paying extra for a good location. If I’m coming down for two nights, I don’t want to spend Saturday repeatedly moving the car just to get coffee, wander through town, go to dinner and come back again.
It’s also a good entry point to Harbor Country. You can keep a weekend centred on New Buffalo or get out on Red Arrow Highway and spend the day poking around the smaller communities, wineries and other stops nearby. That changes what I look for in a hotel. A couple planning to stay mostly in town needs something very different from somebody who already has a full day of driving mapped out.
Marina Grand Resort — Best Harborfront Hotel
There are weekends when I want a clean room and a comfortable bed, and there are weekends when I want to look outside and think, “Yep, this was worth coming to Michigan for.”
Marina Grand is for the second kind.
It sits right on the New Buffalo marina, with rooms facing the harbor and private balconies or patios. I like that for a couples’ trip because coming back to the hotel doesn’t feel like the day is over. You can sit outside for a while, walk into town or stay put and eat at Bentwood Tavern.
The beach and downtown are close enough to reach on foot, which is another reason I can justify spending more here on a short trip.
Just don’t confuse marina-front with beachfront. You aren’t booking a room sitting on the sand. Personally, that wouldn’t bother me. Watching the boats come and go with a cup of coffee in the morning sounds pretty good. But if your entire hotel budget is built around direct beach access, I’d rather you know the difference now than discover it after check-in.
The Neighborhood Hotel New Buffalo — Best Boutique Stay
The Neighborhood Hotel feels more like New Buffalo to me than a big chain property does.
It’s a small place on Merchant Street with only ten suites, and that changes the feel immediately. You’ve got downtown right there, along with restaurants and shops, and you can walk to the beach rather than organising the day around the car.
The suites are more apartment-like than traditional hotel rooms, and there are shared spaces including a kitchen and outdoor gathering areas. I can see this working especially well when a few friends are travelling together and want somewhere they can actually spend a little time rather than everybody disappearing into separate hotel rooms.
I would explain one thing before sending a friend here: it’s a more independent stay. If you like walking into a large lobby, having a conventional front desk and knowing exactly how a chain hotel operates, this probably isn’t why you came. The smaller, less standardized setup is the appeal.
Fairfield Inn & Suites New Buffalo — Best for Convenience
I’ve taken enough Michigan road trips to know that sometimes the smartest hotel is the boring choice on paper.
Fairfield Inn & Suites sits out near I-94. You give up the ability to walk out the door and immediately be part of downtown New Buffalo, but that matters a lot less when breakfast is followed by a day driving through Harbor Country anyway.
This is where I’d look if I were watching the lodging budget, travelling with family or using New Buffalo as one piece of a larger Southwest Michigan trip. You have straightforward highway access, complimentary breakfast and parking, and you’re not paying primarily for a marina or downtown setting.
Would I choose it for an anniversary weekend when we planned to spend most of our time around New Buffalo? Probably not.
Would I stay here when I knew I’d be on Red Arrow Highway five minutes after breakfast? Absolutely.

Where Should You Stay in Southwest Michigan?
If you gave me your dates and asked where to stay, I wouldn’t start by comparing hotel ratings. I’d ask what you plan to do after breakfast.
That sounds almost too simple, but Southwest Michigan trips can involve more driving than people expect. A hotel that looks like a bargain can lose some of its appeal after the third trip back and forth to the town where you really wanted to spend the day.
Choose St. Joseph If…
I send a lot of first-time visitors toward St. Joseph because it’s forgiving.
You don’t need to build the entire trip around one interest. You can spend a few hours at Silver Beach, head downtown when everyone has had enough sun, find somewhere to eat and change tomorrow’s plans without feeling as though you chose the wrong base.
That makes St. Joseph particularly handy for families. I’ve travelled with enough people to know that “we’re all going to love three straight days at the beach” is the sort of sentence that sounds much better before the trip.
If your group wants a little of everything, I’d start here.
Choose South Haven If…
South Haven is where I’d stay when I want to unpack and settle in.
There’s a difference between visiting a beach town and actually spending a few days living at its pace. If your morning starts downtown, the afternoon takes you toward the beach or harbor, and dinner is back in town, paying for a convenient location starts earning its keep.
I wouldn’t necessarily use South Haven as my base for a trip that has me driving all over Southwest Michigan. I like it better when South Haven itself is where I came to be.
Choose New Buffalo If…
Tell me you’ve got Friday night through Sunday and want good food, a little wine tasting and some time by the water, and I’m probably going to bring up New Buffalo.
The town works especially well as a starting point for Harbor Country. You can have dinner in New Buffalo one evening and spend the next day working your way through some of the smaller communities and wineries nearby.
Coming from Chicago? Even better. You can get your Michigan weekend without spending a big chunk of it travelling farther north.
I’d pay closer attention to location here, though. On a two-night trip, I don’t want to spend half of Saturday moving the car around New Buffalo because I saved a little on the room.
Choose Stevensville or Benton Harbor If…
Here’s where I sometimes talk people out of the hotel they thought they wanted.
If your itinerary already has you driving to St. Joseph one day, a winery the next and another town after that, how much is a downtown address really doing for you?
Stevensville and Benton Harbor aren’t the choices people tend to daydream about while planning a Lake Michigan getaway. They can, however, be very sensible places to sleep when you want road access and plan to spend most of the daylight hours somewhere else.
I’ve never believed every dollar of the vacation budget has to go toward the room. If staying a few miles away leaves more money for dinner, another night away or something you actually came to Southwest Michigan to do, I’m perfectly happy making that trade.

Best Southwest Michigan Hotels by Trip Type
By this point, you probably have two or three hotels circled. This is how I’d break the tie.
Best Resort-Style Stay: The Inn at Harbor Shores
Give this one to The Inn at Harbor Shores. If I’m spending the money for a resort, I want a reason to come back before bedtime and actually enjoy where I’m staying. This is the property on this list where I’d be most tempted to leave a little empty space in the itinerary.
Best New Buffalo Getaway: Marina Grand Resort
For two nights in New Buffalo, Marina Grand gets my vote. The marina is part of the experience, and having downtown and the beach within walking distance is valuable when the weekend is already short.
I wouldn’t overthink this one. If Harbor Country is the main attraction and you’ll be driving around all day, save the resort experience for another trip. If New Buffalo itself is the getaway, Marina Grand makes much more sense.
Best Boutique Hotel: The Neighborhood Hotel New Buffalo
Going away with another couple or a few girlfriends? This is the property I’d show them first.
The Neighborhood doesn’t try to give you the standard hotel experience, and that’s precisely the point. Ten suites and shared gathering spaces make more sense to me for a social trip than a big property where everyone disappears down a different hallway.
Best Historic Downtown Stay: Hotel Nichols
Hotel Nichols wins this category because I wouldn’t come here looking for polished resort amenities in the first place.
I’d book it to stay in an older South Haven property with downtown outside the door. If historic buildings aren’t your thing, don’t talk yourself into it because somebody told you it’s more “authentic.” Pick the newer hotel you’ll actually enjoy.
Best for Lake Michigan Views: Holiday Inn Express & Suites St. Joseph Lakefront
If you tell me the first thing you want to see in the morning is Lake Michigan, this is where I’d start looking.
Just remember my earlier warning: a Lake Michigan view isn’t the same thing as having a beach outside the hotel. Know which one matters to you before paying extra for the room.
Best Conventional Value Base: Tru by Hilton Saint Joseph
Tru in Stevensville is my reminder that not every Southwest Michigan trip needs a special hotel.
Maybe you’ve got wineries on the list, dinner in St. Joseph, another town tomorrow and no intention of sitting around the property. Fine. Give me a convenient base, let me keep some money in my pocket, and I’ll spend it somewhere I’ll remember.
That’s really how I book hotels around here. I don’t pay extra for an amenity, view or location simply because it’s supposed to make a vacation better. I pay for the things I’m actually going to use.
What to Know Before Booking a Southwest Michigan Hotel
Before you hit that reservation button, there are a few things I’d check. None of them are complicated, but they can be the difference between loving where you stayed and spending the weekend saying, “I thought the hotel was closer than this.”
Summer Rates and Availability
July and August weekends are not when I get cute and wait around hoping my favorite room will still be there.
If your vacation dates are fixed and you really want to stay in St. Joseph, South Haven or New Buffalo, start looking early. You don’t necessarily have to book the first room you find, but I wouldn’t assume you’ll have the same choices later.
If the prices make you wince, play around with the trip before giving up on Southwest Michigan. Check a weekday. Look at June or September if your schedule allows it. Move a few miles away from the water.
I’d much rather stay ten minutes farther out and enjoy another night in Michigan than blow the budget just to have the “right” address.
Waterfront Doesn’t Always Mean Beachfront
I learned a long time ago to investigate the word “waterfront.”
Waterfront where?
Lake Michigan? The St. Joseph River? A marina? And can I actually get to the beach from the property?
A harbor view can be wonderful. So can sitting outside in the morning watching boats instead of waves. The problem comes when you thought you were booking one thing and arrived to find another.
If walking straight from the hotel to the sand matters, make sure the property actually offers direct beach access. Don’t assume it from the photos or the word “lakefront.”
Check the Exact Hotel Location
I always pull up the map before I book.
You’ll see hotels using a better-known town in their name even though the actual property is in a neighboring community. Around St. Joseph, that might mean finding yourself in Benton Harbor or Stevensville.
That may be completely fine. I’ve stayed outside the center of plenty of Michigan towns because the price was better and I knew I’d be driving all day anyway.
But if you imagined walking to dinner every night, finding out after check-in that dinner is a drive away is irritating.
Decide Whether Walkability Matters
Ask yourself one question: how often do I really want to get back in the car?
For a couples’ weekend in New Buffalo or South Haven, my answer might be “as little as possible.” I’ll pay a little more for that.
Put me on a trip where I’m visiting a winery in the morning, another town after lunch and someplace completely different tomorrow? Forget it. Give me the convenient hotel with easy parking.
There’s no prize for booking the room closest to Lake Michigan. Spend the extra money on location when that location will genuinely make your trip better.
Hotels vs Other Places to Stay in Southwest Michigan
I’m a hotel person right up until the hotel stops making sense.
Two nights in St. Joseph with my husband? I’m probably booking a hotel. I don’t need a kitchen, three bedrooms and a living room. I want to drop the bags, figure out where we’re eating and get on with the weekend.
Now add another couple, a few kids and four or five nights, and I’m looking at the numbers again.
That’s when a Southwest Michigan Vacation Rental can start earning its keep. Having a kitchen isn’t terribly exciting when you’re planning the trip, but it becomes a lot more interesting around the third morning when everybody wants something different for breakfast. Separate bedrooms and a place to sit together at night can be worth more than having somebody make the bed every day.
There are trips when I’d skip both. If my husband and I were planning a quiet anniversary weekend, I’d at least look through the Southwest Michigan Bed & Breakfasts before deciding. If the whole point was getting away from town and having more space around us, I’d see what was available among the Southwest Michigan Cabins & Cottages.
My dividing line is usually pretty simple. For a short trip where we’re going to spend most of our time out exploring, I like the ease of a hotel. Once I catch myself wishing the room had another bedroom, a kitchen or somewhere for everybody to gather, I stop trying to make a hotel work and book the kind of place the trip actually needs.
Frequently Asked Questions About Hotels in Southwest Michigan
What Is the Best Area to Stay in Southwest Michigan for a First Visit?
Nine times out of ten, when somebody tells me they’ve never been here and doesn’t give me much else to work with, I send them toward St. Joseph.
It’s just an easy place to get your bearings. You can spend time at Silver Beach, walk around downtown, find a good dinner and still have plenty of Southwest Michigan within reach when you wake up the next morning and decide you want to go exploring.
Now, tell me you’ve been dreaming about three lazy days in one beach town and suddenly we’re having a different conversation. I might put you in South Haven instead. This is why I always ask what you actually want to do before I tell you where to sleep.
What Southwest Michigan Town Is Best for a Beach Vacation?
If you said, “Kim, forget everything else. We’re coming for a Michigan beach vacation,” I’d start looking at South Haven.
I like the way the beach, harbor and downtown can all belong to the same trip there. You don’t have to keep inventing things to do.
St. Joseph is the one I’d look at when there are kids involved or not everybody wants to spend every waking hour near the sand. New Buffalo comes into the conversation when somebody starts adding wineries and nice dinners to the wish list.
That’s three very different vacations, even though all three towns are on Lake Michigan.
Are There Hotels Directly on Lake Michigan in Southwest Michigan?
Yes, but this is where I want you to slow down and read before you book.
Southwest Michigan has hotels beside all kinds of water, and the wording can get confusing quickly. Lakefront isn’t necessarily beachfront. Harborfront certainly isn’t beachfront. And “Lake Michigan views” may mean exactly that—a view.
I’ve got nothing against any of those. Give me a balcony overlooking a marina and a cup of coffee and I’m perfectly content.
But if you’ve promised the kids that they’re going to walk out of the hotel and straight onto the beach, make sure that’s actually possible at the property you’re booking. Don’t let the word “waterfront” make that promise for you.
Where Should Couples Stay in Southwest Michigan?
This depends on what the two of you do when you finally get a weekend away.
If that means dinner somewhere good, a winery the next afternoon and not having an enormous agenda, New Buffalo and Harbor Country are hard for me to argue against.
If you want more of a resort weekend, I’d bring St. Joseph into the conversation. If your idea of romance is wandering into town, getting something to eat and taking your time without worrying much about the car, have a look at South Haven.
I wouldn’t pick the town first and then try to make your weekend fit it. Do the opposite.
Where Should Families Stay?
St. Joseph is usually the safe answer I give families, and I mean “safe” in the planning sense.
Kids can love the beach at 10:00 in the morning and be completely finished with it by lunch. St. Joseph gives you somewhere to go from there without making the day feel like Plan A failed.
South Haven can be terrific for families too, especially when everybody is happy with a vacation centred on the beach, harbor and town. If you’re staying several days and don’t feel the need to keep moving, I’d give it a serious look.
Is It Cheaper to Stay Outside the Southwest Michigan Beach Towns?
Sometimes considerably enough that I check.
I always look at Stevensville and Benton Harbor before deciding what a St. Joseph address is worth to me. Then I look at the map.
That last part matters. Saving money is wonderful until you’ve accidentally created a commute on your vacation.
If staying ten or fifteen minutes away saves enough to pay for a good dinner or helps us afford another night, you’ve got my attention. If I’m saving a few dollars and adding a bunch of driving every day, I’ll pay more and stay where I wanted to be in the first place.
Final Thoughts: Finding the Right Southwest Michigan Hotel
Here’s what I do before I book: I pull up the map and look at where we’re actually going.
Not the places I might visit if we somehow have six extra hours on Saturday. The places already on the plan.
Once I do that, the hotel choice usually gets easier. Sometimes I’ll spend more because being able to walk to dinner is worth every penny. Other times I realise we’ll be driving around Southwest Michigan from morning until evening, and suddenly that less expensive room in Benton Harbor or Stevensville looks pretty smart.
I’ve never seen much sense in paying for a view, downtown address or resort amenities because somebody says that’s how you’re supposed to vacation here. Pay for the parts of the hotel you’ll actually use.
